Open letter to Freddy Thielemans, mayor of Brussels City, and Philippe Pivin, mayor of municipality of Koekelberg.

From: Walktobrussels.eu

Next saturday October 8th the indignant marches will arrive in Brussels with the aim of organizing and participating in Agora Brussels, a pacific forum in the form of a campment. There will be assemblies, workgroups, and debates in different locations in the city, as had been announced at the marches’ departure from Spain, France, Germany, the Neatherlands, and the United Kingdom.

Regarding the proposal of Mayor Thielemans, to camp in the closed area of Tour et Taxis, we believe that, only three days short of our arrival in Brussels after a 2000-Km journey, it is inadequate to generate uncertainty about the place where we can work and sleep.

The marchers consider that Elisabeth Park does not hurt their dignity in any way, since it is a wide open green space, suitable for the participation of all persos who come by their own means from different countries.

Considering the precedents of other cultural concentrations such as the Feria Andaluza, the Plazey Festival, or the Belgian Mussels Festival, which gathered up to 200,000 people during several days, we believe around 2,000 indignants, in proportion, do not constitute a problem at all.

This place is without a doubt the ideal site to host this meeting, to debate about the future of Europe on a local, regional, and global level.

This is the way in which the European citizenry wishes to spread their message. Camping and sharing ideas and information in a public space, visible and accessible to all.
We are a horizontal movement aimed at stir public awareness for social, cultural, ecological, and economical issues, as well as the rights and duties of citizens.
We think it is essential that everybody can participate and that we are accessible for a large quantity of people, because the debates that will be generated have a very broad audience, and it is important to gather as many ideas as possible. For these reasons, we stand by our decission to camp at Park Elisabeth next Saturday.
As we have proven during the marches through Spain, France, and Belgium, the places we have occupied have been left in the same or better conditions as we have found them. It is important to also consider that the campers will have at their disposal an infrastructure provided by the inhabitants of Brussels, which will cover their basic needs.
Yours faithfully,
